Tesco’s Finest Chianti Classico Riserva, currently discounted at £7
After our wallet-emptying Waitrose Valpolicella Amarone last week, we’ve got something a bit more affordable for y’all this time! This Tesco Chianti is a firecracker of a vino rosso. It's packed with plummy, spicy flavour, and with plenty of tannin, body and acid to boot, there's a lot going on. At 13.5%, it’s pretty boozy too! But if you like your wines bold, and you’ve got something hearty in the fridge to go with it, then you’ve got yourself a nice little evening in.
A Bit of Background
Let’s do a bit of detective work on the label. Chianti refers to the style and area of the wine - in the heart of Tuscany and dominated by the punchy Sangiovese red grape. Classico means that, within the Chianti region, its from the original heartland where you can rely on a heritage of the wine growers. Riserva means it must have spent at least 2 years ageing in oak, as opposed to just one year for standard Classico. This ageing gives it its strength, plus its silky smoothness and full flavour.
And now for the food. This ain’t a shy, retiring bottle of wine. It’s got some balls, so you’re food will be overpowered if you don’t pick something that will stand up to it. I’d recommend slow-cooked meat dishes; something strong and savoury. We’ve got a vegetarian in our ranks at Cook Eat Discover, so we went for a Pasta all Norma (see recipe below) - a flavourful Sicilian aubergine and tomato pasta sauce that held its ground pretty well with this Chianti. Alternatively something with mushrooms/porcini would be a great match.
Enjoy this one my booze brothers and sisters, and please let us know how you found it!
